Annual Meeting

*2009 Annual Meeting
of
The Pennsylvania German Society

Saturday, June 6

at the
Friedens UCC

Oley, PA

Oley Township was settled in 1712. The origin of its name comes from the Lenapi work OLINK, which means hollow or kettle. By 1740 a large portion of the township had been acquired by more than fifty families. Its historic character was established during the colonial period. Stone farm houses, barns, and outbuildings showed the distinct features of Pennsylvania German architecture. The village of Oley was the primary commercial center of the township from 1860 to 1960.

In March 1983, the entire township of Oley was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the first-of-a-kind designation because it included a large amount of farm land as a proper context for the total collection of rural historic buildings. Comprised of 15,000 acres, Oley Township is one of the largest historic districts in the country. Oley Township's rural landscape, which has been remarkably preserved, depicts a panorama of rural development from the time of settlement to present day.

Friedens Church is one of 30 buildings on our tour of Main Street, Oley. Its establishment in 1832 marked the development of Friedensburg, Oley's first name. The original stone building boasted a tall steeple and belfry. It was replaced in 1886 by the present structure whose interior was renovated in the Gothic style in 1923 by John Keehn.

Phil Pendleton and Cynthia Faulk will be available for book signings. If you already have their publications, you may bring them to obtain their signatures.
