Pennsylvania Dutch Dinner at the White Dog Cafe - Philadelphia, PA - William Woys Weaver (Co-sponsored by Slow Food Philadelphia) The art of classical Pennsylvania Dutch cookery has become a faded memory, replaced largely by the image of the Amish farmer and Lancaster County-style family restaurants promoting sugary pickles and tourist fare of no great culinary merit. With a nod to the Pennsylvania Dutch mid-winter observance of Ground Hog Day, our guest host and speaker William Woys Weaver (well-known author, food historian, and Contributing Editor for GOURMET) will lead you through a “Dutch Sampler” dinner based on a tasting of some of the classical dishes of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, which is above all else regional and seasonal, so look for hearty mid-winter fare.
$45 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Call 215.386.9224 for reservations.

Brown Bag Lunch and Sunday Afternoon Lecture
Series "Eastertide Traditions"
German Easter traditions have been modified and
adapted in American culture; it was the German
immigrants who brought the custom of the
Osterhaws or Easter rabbit to the American
colonies. The traditions of crafting egg trees,
saffron egg nests, and Easter birds are no
longer local practicies but the Easter bunny,
Easter breads, and decorated Easter eggs are
still part of today's customs. Dr. Allen
Viehmeyer and Rebecca Lawrence will discuss the
German roots of Easter traditions, focusing on
lost PA German and German American Eastertide
customs.

Hymnody Exhibit -
Lobby of the Young Center, Elizabethtown College
An exhibit
featuring a representative
sample of historic hymnals
from three hymn
traditions—Anabaptists,
Mennonites and Amish;
Radical Pietists, Brethren
and River Brethren; Lutheran
and Lutheran Pietists—opens
at the Young Center on March
26. The exhibit is the fruit
of scholarship on
Anabaptist, Brethren, and
Lutheran hymnody by project
collaborators David Rempel
Smucker, Hedda Durnbaugh,
Betty Long, John Spangler,
Mark Oldenburg, and Steve
Scott.
The exhibit interprets some
of the significant changes
over time in the Anabaptist,
Pietist, and Lutheran hymn
traditions, and illustrates
how each tradition borrowed
hymns from other traditions.
Visitors have the unique
opportunity to see hymnals
that have rarely been
displayed together.
